Favourite Hikes

Our team have shared their favourite hikes to help inspire you to organise your own hike!

Afonso, Focus Ireland Dublin
One of my favourite hikes is in Howth, fairly close to Dublin city, only a 45min bus drive from the centre. This hike has amazing views, for me personally this is really important since it helps take the focus out of being tired. This hike is 2.5/3 hours, which always ends up being amazing. I can guarantee you will always feel better afterwards, at least I do!

Monica, Focus Ireland Northwest
A hike that I particularly like is the Benbulbin Forest Walk Trail in Sligo. It’s a lovely trail, perfect for those with little hiking experience and families with little ones. The hike perfectly represents the variety of Ireland’s nature. The mix of the woodlands followed by the amazing Benbulbin Mountain makes it the perfect weekend afternoon stroll.

Julia, Focus Ireland Dublin
One of my favourite hikes would be Lugnaquilla in Wicklow. It’s a challenging climb but the gorgeous scenery really makes it worthwhile. We did the Lugnaquilla and Arts Lough Circular loop which starts in the Baravore carpark. The weather was good, and the cloud wasn’t too low, so we were treated to some beautiful views from the top!

Niamh, Focus Ireland Cork & Kerry
One of my favourite hikes is Torc Waterfall in Co. Kerry. It is a lovely loop in Killarney National Park. It is steep in some parts but manageable, and the views are worth it! Killarney is nearby for a post walk lunch.

Lucy, Focus Ireland Dublin
My favourite hike has to be Slieve Bearnagh in County Down, Northern Ireland. I went hiking with friends on a perfect sunny day so we were lucky to do this loop hike in the best conditions. It was a challenge as it was quite steep in parts but so worth it to reach the top and be rewarded with amazing views of the Mourne mountains.

  • Location: Slieve Bearnagh
  • Difficulty: Difficult
  • Distance: 9.3km
  • Elevation: 550m

Lorraine, Focus Ireland Northwest
I'm a regular along the Great Western Greenway but if I had to pinpoint the ultimate section, it would undoubtedly be the stretch from Mulranny to Achill. Whether I'm cycling or walking, this route offers the most idyllic scenery in the West of Ireland.

Jessica, Focus Ireland Southeast
One of my favourite hikes is the Coumshigaun Lake Loop Walk in the Comeragh Mountains. This is a great adventure and family friendly. You walk through the hills and woodlands to arrive at Coumshingaun Lake. This is the perfect place for a moments reflection and a picnic. For the brave there is an extra challenge to climb to the top of the Coumshigaun Mountain and take in the panoramic views of the region.

Karen, Focus Ireland Dublin
One of my favourite hikes is the Bray Head loop walk. It can be a bit of slog going uphill, but once you reach the Bray Head Cross at the top, you're rewarded with a stunning view of the Irish Sea, Dublin's urban sprawl, and the Wicklow Mountains.

  • Location: Bray Head Loop
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Length: 5.6km
  • Elevation: 190m
